Canton Fire Department to Participate in Fire Prevention Week in October
CANTON — Chief Charles Doody announces that the Canton Fire Department will be participating in Fire Prevention Week in October and will host an open house at the fire station.
The open house will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canton Fire Department headquarters, 99 Revere St.
Canton Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Officer, Lt. Greg Woodbury, is organizing this year’s event. Planned activities include a live fire demonstration, which highlights the effectiveness of home fire sprinklers.
In addition, a Sparky the Fire Dog mascot will be on hand and visitors will have the opportunity to tour the station, use a firehose, climb on the fire trucks and interact with Canton’s firefighters.
Fire Prevention Week is a program of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and runs from Oct. 7-13. The theme of this year’s week-long event is “Look. Listen. Be aware- fire can happen anywhere.”
The latest statistics from the NFPA show that if a person has a reported fire in their home, they are more likely to die today than they were a few decades ago. This statistic is behind this year’s theme.
“Working smoke alarms save lives. In addition to that, families need to create and then practice a home escape plan with a meeting place, so that everyone is accounted for when they evacuate the home. Everyone living in the house should know two ways out of each room,” said Chief Doody.
Through three simple calls-to-action, the week’s theme identifies basic but essential ways people can reduce their risk to fire and be prepared in the event of one:
- Look for places fire can start
- Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm
- Learn two ways out of each room
